Welding and cloning

Welding and cloning

I made a ship on 3D max. insted of molding the ship straight from a stamdard primitive box i deleated one whole side of the box , once this was done i copied the box by draging the box whilst holding SHIFT but instead of copying it as a normal copy i copied it to an "instant" this meant that i can edit the first box which i copied and anything that happens to the first box will also happen to the second copied box, this proces means saves time and mean i will have an model that is identical on both sides. To edit the model i made it an editable mesh and use the tools such a vector selector and extrude to edit it.
once i was happy with my model i had the weld the two box`s to do this i moved them to join using the movement tool on 3D max after this i had to attach them using the "Attach" tool, after this i had to weld the two standard primitives i did this by using the vertex tool to select down the middle of the model one i had hilighted it i attached them.

This is my space ship once i added coulor and texture using the material editor

Review of desktop background

Dose the end product match your original intentions?
Yes , my final desktop design is very similar to one of my four designs that i drafted.
 seen here :

Is the end product appropriate for the target audience?
My target audience is very wide so i needed a background that is appropriate for young and old.
I believe that my background is appropriate for all ages as it contains no violence, swears or inappropriate images.

This is the final design for my desktop background. To create the backgound i used adobe photoshop.the bacground is created using the circle tool on photoshop .. and to create the various different styles and types of circles and swirls i used different brushes avalible on photoshop. I inserted the logos from the internet.
and i also inserted the dancing shilloetes fromthe internet , i had more time i would of created the shilloettes my self and i may revisit this project at a later date and do so.

Peer review : of my desktop image

Points to improve on :
  • place for icons
  • include all 6 points , as i had missed: misconduct, behavior, equality and study
  • reduce size of media and shipley college logo as it creates more space for icons

This is a render of a short animation I made using 3D max.
This is the first introduction I have had to animation with in 3D max, and at this stage I can oly do very simple movements as shown in the video.

Creating textures

Textures applied to text

I have taken a render of all of the textures that i have made using the material editor.

This texture i created using the marble material template. I combined 2 colours orange and yellow to create the effect.

This texture i created using the wood material template , it is my favrorite texture as i belive it looks the most realistic.

I created this using the swirl template. i had to edit the angle and thickness of the swirl to create this effect.

Creating a car on 3D max

This is a screen shot of me using 3D max to create a car.
This car was created by editing a standard primitive box , to edit the shape of the box to make it look like a car i converted it to an editable mesh then used tools such as the the extrude tool to pull out part of the box that i want to edit further. i also used tools such as the edge, vertex and facer tool to hellp me mold the box into a car shape. i used a tool to give my car colour.

Exploration of art and design

Investigation

For part of my desktop project i have to create my own Desktop image.
I have already created 4 initial designs for my desktop background image, As i am unsure of which design to go for i am going to research further into different art styles and designs.

Pop art

Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the mid 1950s in Britain and in the late 1950s in the United States. Pop removes the material from its context and isolates the object, or combines it with other objects, for contemplation. Characterized by themes and techniques drawn from popular mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects, pop art is widely interpreted as a reaction to the then-dominant ideas of abstract expressionism.

Retro art

The style now called "retro art" is a genre of pop art which was developed in the 1940s and 1950s in response to a need for bold, eye-catching graphics that were easy to reproduce on simple presses available at the time in major centres. Retro advertising art has experienced a resurgence in popularity since its style is distinctive from modern computer-generated styling.

Modern art

Modern art refers to artistic works produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the style and philosophy of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. Modern artists experimented with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. A tendency toward abstraction is characteristic of much modern art. More recent artistic production is often called Contemporary art or Postmodern art.

After reserching 3 different art styles i have decided that i am going to use the retro style for my desktop background.

Flash maze

Today we learnt how to make a maze using adobe flash.
to create the maze i had to program flash to respond when the mouse was rolled over the blue parts of my maze, leaving a white line through my maze for the cursor to move through to try and win the game.
the aim of the game is to move the cursor through the maze to the red point.
All though my maze is not a complicated as professional games, i believe it is very successfull and works well as a simple games.

Font

This is a protential font i could use for my desktop background. This font is moresuited to the pac-man theamed backgrouds i have done.
This font is more suited to the retro side of my design as it has been featured i some classic pop art and retro art.

.
This is my  4 designs for my background image.
This is my first design. this background was inspired by PAC-man the arcade game.
good points about this background are that it incorporates spaces logos and includes the icons as part of the background its self, it is also vibrant and interesting.
Bad features of this background is it may be too distracting and cluttered on the desktop.

This is my second design it is based heavily on a design i found on the Internet, the image has a heavy retro theme.
This background incorporates the icons in a nice way and is very colourful and aesthetically pleasing.
Bad features of this image are silhouette of woman my be unsuitable for younger audience.

After my first PAC man idea i decided to see if i could improve on the PAC-man inspired design.
for this design i used a much more simple design.
good features of this design are that i think it is much less distracting as a background and allot less cluttered.
bed features of the background are that i don't think it Incorporates the rules and the icons as well as my first design.

These are the images that helped and inspire me whilst i was making my desktop backgound.

Mind map

This is the mind map i made to show my ideas for the desing of my desktop backgound.

evaluating backgrounds

This desktop image is an optical illusion all though this image is very amusing at can get distracting after a while and has no real place to accommodate icons and logos.
This is a clever desktop background as it is both interesting and has space for icons and logos. The background is clever as it creates the illusion that the icons are being sucked into the whirl pool and accommodates the icons in a fun and effective way.
This is a very simple background it is very appealing and has space for icons and logos. It is very bright and has good clear graphics.
This is a background aimed at fans of the game Mario. This is a bright and vibrant background and has space to accommodate icons and logos. The graphics are good and it has an interesting design.

desktop background

Equality and diversity desktop background
I am going to create a new desktop background for the computers in the games and media suite in college. My back ground will need to include:
·         Shipley college logo
·         Media suite logo
·         Space for icons
·         College Rules
·         Interesting and attractive image#

This is the current desktop background for all the computers in the games and media suite.
As you can see it contains the Shipley college logo the media suite logo and space for 22 icons, it also contains the rules cleverly hidden as point scores. This background is aimed more at game students as it is based on the classic arcade game space invaders. This background is practical and easy to use whilst also being very appealing to look at.
This background is a distinction level and I am going to use this as a guide of what a successful background looks like.

Factory

This is my factory i created it using 3D max software. To create the factory i first made a plan of the design on paper so i had an idea of what style and shapes i was aiming to create. one i had planned my design i started making it on 3D max. To create the factory on 3D max i used standard primitives to create the basic shape of the factory , i then  used the extrude tool and the taper tool to edit the final look of the factory.

this was use full as it taught me further about extruding and manipulating simple primitives to get the desired shape.

This is a castle i made using 3D max, i created the towers by creating a standard primitive box then converting it to an editable mesh then editing to shape then i used the taper tool to give the tower a curve, I then used the extrude tool to create raised turrets on my tower.
i did the same with the walls of my castle but i did not taper the walls. If i had more time i would have added more detail to the walls and tower i would of added a door and a draw bridge and also a motte.

This is an exaple of a proffetional 3D design of a castle . as you can see there are allot more sections to this castle in comparison to the one i created. the castle also contains an environment is the form of a motte and land scape with a plain blackdrop. the walls and roof of the castle contain texture and make the modle look more realistic.

Cow boy

This is my cow boy i made it using 3D max software, before i made my character on 3D max i created an initial draft of my character, i then used this image as a aid to help me create the character. i used primitives to create the character. the character look quite like my initial idea and i am pleased with it.

creating a Robot

I used 3D max to create a robot character, i used standard primitives and extended primitives to create the character, i had to edit the postioning, size, shape, colour and angle of the primitives to create the character. I used 3D max software to create the robot character. creating this character helped me further understand the 3d max software and enabled me to see how primitives join together to create a desired shape.

unit 19 desktop project

For this project i looked at 4 different genres of gaming and looked at what images represented them. for horror/war i had images of monsters and fictional creatures. for Si-Fi i had the images of a man in space suit armour. and for fantasy i had the image of Mario and other creatures from the Nintendo game series.

horror- the horror genre is generally associated with gore and violence, games are normally set in a derelict environment with very little light and enemy are constantly jumping out at you.

War- the war genre is obviously set in a war environment such as the world war or sometimes in the medieval wars but these games are usually strategy games, where as most war games are first person shooters.

sci-fi- is set in space and normally has a completely fictional environment sci-fi games are usually RPG.

Fantasy- fantasy as a genre is harder to define as all games include a level of fantasy but the fantasy genre is usually made up of fictional creatures and are RPG games.

most games are a mixture of these genres such as the alien games which are both first person shooters (associated with war) and have aliens in (sci-fi). their are also games with don't come specifically under any of these categories such as sport games and racing games.

This is Lara Croft she is a game character in the game franchise tomb raider.
I like this character as it is very realistic graphics and the character is made to look as human as possible . I believe the most successfully game characters are game characters that look realistic as appose to cartoon characters, this is because it add`s an extra level of realism to the game to immerse you further in the gaming experience. the Lara croft character has become a popular and well known part of the game industry and its popularity has lead the creation of several movie based on the character.

Although my personal preference with game characters is for them to look realistic their is no escaping the fact that some of the most memorable characters are cartoon characters such as Mario, sonic and Pokemon these characters are all family friendly and appear in many sequels to the original game. Any true gaming fan will have fond memory's of playing one of these games.

First 3D max tutorial

Today was the first lesson we got to used the 3D max software.
chris would be our tutor for 3D max this year.
the fist this we created on 3D max was a simple abstract scene this lesson was to help us learn the very basics of 3D max such as navigating the screens learnign what various buttons did and learning how to create basic shapes.
To create this scene bellow i had to minipulate the size, placement and colour of the shapes.
i added all of the basic primatives (shapes) on to a plane.
i will be using the 3D max software to creat my game trailer in the second year of my course so a good knowlage of this software is essential.

Call of duty modern warfare 2 is one of my favorite games. Call of duty is a first person shooter game,, it is made to be a s realistic as possible. this game is success full as it it has many styles of game play online, missions and split screen giving a wide rage and style of ways that then game can be played.
hello my name is Alex and this is my blog, this blog is going to display all my college work from my 2 year course at shipley college. Hopefully you will be able to see my skills and knowledge of the software's used in the gaming industry improve through out my blog.
